From Stewart Coggin, your Guide to World Soccer
I continue my series looking at the best players in the world in each position. This week it's midfielders. I have classified Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as midfielders, even though they do not stick to any one position. Messi enjoys a free role that regularly sees him dropping deep, while Ronaldo generally features on the left of Real Madrid's attacking midfield three. Feel free to debate the subject in the World Soccer forum. Follow me on Twitter: http://twitter.com/#!/SCoggin_journo

Lionel Messi
Considered by many as the best soccer player in the world, there are few finer sights than Lionel Messi using a mixture of pace and trickery to beat multiple defenders from his position on the right side of the Barcelona attack.

Cristiano Ronaldo
If anyone embodies the new age player, it is Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro. Possessing strength, pace, skill and professionalism in abundance, Ronaldo's many attributes leave him well equipped for the modern game.

Xavi Hernandez
The name Xavi is generally followed by the words 'pulled the strings,' so influential is he for club and country. It is not uncommon for Xavi to complete the same number of passes in a match as four or five of the opposition put together.
